Healing Ourselves: The African American Woman's Guide to Richer Living
Published in Paperback by LoveLight Publishing (December, 1998)
Average review score:

An awakeningThis book provides the reader a multi-dimensional view of the African American female. Ms. Bailey shares her own experiences and those of the women she interviewed in an even handed way that will reasonate for all that read the book. Her mature and often personal exploration of the isms of our society and the impact on the African American Female, left me feeling sad, angry, impassioned, and yet hopeful. I highly recommend this book for all who seek enlightment and truth. I also strongly recommend this bookfor young African American women and men. I believe this is an excellent educational tool for the young who are in the process of awakening.

A History of Our Time: Readings on Postwar America
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (December, 2002)
Average review score:

Valuable ResourceIn this anthology, Chafe and Sitkoff have collected a number of articles that are critical in understanding the major issues in American history during the past 50 years. Despite the broad thematic scope of essays--ranging from post-war foreign policy to the creation of an "urban underclass" during the Reagan administration--the organization and careful editing of the book provide the reader with a clear understanding of America's recent sociopolitical transitions. The lucid and well-written individual essays, submitted by leading historians and well-known political figures, work particularly well alongside the documents and commentaries they are paired with.

History of the Hebrew CommonwealthThis book is one of my favorites. It presents the history of the Jewish people in a interesting and readable manner. I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Old Testament, especially people who are studying the Old Testament for the first time. It really helps put things in a proper historical perspective.

Human Paleopsychology: Applications to Aggression and Pathological Processes
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (January, 1987)
Average review score:

The next step in our understanding of man.Bailey presents the next logical step in our understanding of human nature and psychology. Building on the works of E. O. Wilson (sociobiology) and others, he outlines the idea of a continuum of deep seated evolutionary rules. These rules have evolved over eons of primate, and then human, development. These rules have been integrated into our genes because they increased our adaptability to our environment and thus, individuals with these rules were preferentially selected. Bailey points out that most of our recent development as Homo sapiens has been in a primitive survival mode - a hunter gatherer type of setting. It stands to reason that many of the rules involve aggressive behaviours. The "holdover" of these ancient rules continues in our natural responses - in the way we see and respond to the world and they therefore continue to influence our behaviour today. Thus, all of the adaptive rules selected over millions of years of evolution are still lurking within us. In the last blink of our evolution, man has created culture and societal norms and rules. Our higher cognitive functions allow us to rise above our animal heritage and to develop cognitive, volitional control of our behaviour. Today, the individual has to juggle various opposing forces, both from within and from external sources. We have to control and direct many of the lower impulses in the face of our new and largely foreign cultural and societal demands. Most of the time, socialization wins, but as Bailey describes, sometimes we regress to our lower templates and instincts. The result of regression is usually pathology and mayhem. A wonderful book indeed.

The Ideal Puppy
Published in Hardcover by Barrons Educational Series (February, 2000)
Average review score:

Great first dog book for the prospective owner. This is a great first book to read if you are think of getting a dog or puppy in the future. It has excellent pictures illustrating the techniques discussed in the text. It gives a realistic picture of what is involved in selecting and training your puppy from day 1 when you bring it home. It says nothing I consider in my opinion "wrong". The book also focuses on socialization and positive training right from the begining, and you cannot do more "right" than that!

Images of English : A Cultural History of the Language
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (01 January, 1991)
Average review score:

convincing historical researchBailey's book deals with the attitudes towards English and how they have changed over the centuries. For this purpose the author has collected an impressive amount of evidence which he presents in a convincing, not overly academic way. Bailey deals both with attitudes towards English in Great Britian itself and abroad, that is in the former colonies. A highly recommended book!

Interactive Spatial Data Analysis
Published in Paperback by Longman Scientific and Technical (September, 1995)
Average review score:

An Excellent Introduction to Spatial AnalysisThis is a great book that was a real help in getting me through school and in my first jobs afterwards. It provides the clearest explanation of various spatial statistical techniques that I found (after an extensive literature review for a Masters thesis). The software package is great, particularly because it allows the reader to see all the theory in action in a graphical way.
